Creative Community Development & Engagement

What Makes Creative Edge Different?

For more than thirty years I have worked across the arts, culture, education, volunteering and community sectors.

My approach combines creative practice with community development, helping people think differently, explore possibilities and discover solutions together.

Rather than relying solely on traditional meetings and consultation methods, I use participatory and creative approaches that encourage people to contribute ideas, build confidence and develop shared ownership of outcomes.

The result is often deeper engagement, stronger relationships and solutions that are both practical and imaginative.

Why Creative Approaches Work

Many organisations rely on meetings, consultations and presentations to engage people.

Whilst these have their place, creative approaches often enable people to think differently, participate more confidently and contribute ideas that might otherwise remain unheard.

Creativity helps:

  • Engage people who may not respond to traditional consultation methods
  • Encourage quieter voices to participate
  • Build confidence and trust
  • Generate fresh ideas
  • Strengthen relationships
  • Develop shared ownership of solutions
  • Create memorable and meaningful experiences

The most powerful solutions are often already present within communities. My role is to help uncover them.

How I Work

My work is rooted in:

Asset Based Community Development - ABCD

ABCD focuses on strengths rather than deficits.

Rather than asking:

What problems do we have?

ABCD asks:

What strengths, skills, resources and relationships already exist within this community?

By identifying and building on these assets, communities become more confident, resilient and able to shape their own future.

Community Engagement

Supporting organisations to involve people in shaping decisions, projects and services.

Examples include:

  • Community conversations
  • Public engagement events
  • Consultation activities
  • Focus groups
  • Resident engagement programmes
  • Community workshops

Stakeholder Development

Strong communities rely on strong relationships.

I help organisations identify, connect and strengthen relationships between:

  • Residents
  • Community groups
  • Voluntary organisations
  • Public services
  • Businesses
  • Strategic partners

This creates stronger partnerships and greater opportunities for collaboration.

Community Participation and Co-production

People are more likely to support change when they have helped shape it.

Co-production places people at the centre of decision making by recognising lived experience as expertise.

Approaches may include:

  • Co-design workshops
  • Participatory planning
  • Community action planning
  • Volunteer involvement
  • Service user engagement
  • Partnership development

Examples of Creative Engagement

Every project is different, but creative methods might include:

  • Open Space events
  • Asset mapping
  • Storytelling
  • Visual consultation
  • Heritage and place-based activities
  • Creative workshops
  • Community conversations
  • Future visioning exercises
  • Collaborative planning sessions

  • Local authorities
  • Charities and voluntary organisations
  • Housing providers
  • Community groups
  • Health and wellbeing organisations
  • Educational providers
